I was reading a book the other day entitled The Release Of The Spirit by Watchman Nee. I encourage you to check it out. I have just started it, and it seems wonderful so far. Convicting is not a strong enough term to use in reference to it. That being stated, I want to share a nugget I found in the first chapter.
Brokenness is the only way we can truly let our light shine for the Lord. In Matthew 5:16 we see the scripture using the word “let”, not “make”.
(Matthew 5:16) “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (KJV)
This letting, I feel, is in complete harmony with my earlier statement. We “let” the light shine through our brokenness. Jesus stated in Luke 9:23 that one had to carry their cross in order to be His disciple. This cross is usually the vehicle our brokenness travels in.
(Luke 9:23) “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (KJV)
An automobile mechanic usually has a toolbox full of tools. Some are rather ordinary, as far as tools are concerned. Almost every mechanic I know has, at least, one drawer with specialty tools. These are used often, but are very specific in design. Some have only one purpose. Our “crosses” and brokenness are many times like those specialty tools. Instead of them being in a mechanic’s hand, they are in the God’s hand. God allows these times of brokenness into our life for a purpose. Ultimately to glorify Him, but also to make us look more like our Master.
Mark records a great example of the value of brokenness. It illustrates why we need to be broken. Again, many times this is in the form of a cross. Consider…
(Mark 14:3) “And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.” (KJV)
In this verse we see where a nameless woman brings a valuable box of ointment to Jesus. She brakes this expensive box and anoints our Lord with the contents. (Read the whole passage later) This box is like us, that is, our outer man (old nature). The box (old nature) had to be broken in order for the fragrance to be enjoyed. It is only when we are broken that Jesus Christ can shine the brightest in our life.
Our Lord was well pleased with the actions of this humble woman. She decided beforehand that she was going to use this expensive oil in this way. We too will have to decide beforehand that we want our great treasure, of course, I am speaking of the precious Holy Spirit, to come forth! God wants to use us to fulfill His purpose, but we will have to be broken to be the most effective.
Are you willing to let God brake you? Are you willing to allow God to bring pressure into your life through your crosses? Remember that our All-Wise, Heavenly Father knows just exactly what we need to bring Him the most glory. Do like this woman and offer yourself to be a broken alabaster box, so the Holy Ghost can manifest Himself in the sweet fragrance that results. A rose smells the best when its pedals are bruised and broken!
